Amy Byer Shainman - Executive Producer

Amy Byer Shainman, also known as “The BRCA Responder”, is a passionate BRCA/Hereditary Cancer Health advocate who has appeared in numerous media campaigns, news stories, television segments, sharing her story while stressing how crucial genetic counseling is in the BRCA/Hereditary Cancer genetic testing equation.

Like Angelina Jolie, Shainman is a BRCA1 positive previvor; a survivor of a predisposition to cancer. In other words, she is someone at an extraordinarily high risk for cancer who has not actually had the disease. Also like Jolie, Shainman had prophylactic surgeries to drastically reduce her cancer risk. In 2010, Shainman underwent a nipple sparing, skin sparing mastectomy with reconstruction plus an oophorectomy and hysterectomy.

While Jolie inherited her BRCA1 gene mutation from her mother, Shainman inherited her BRCA1 gene mutation from her father. Shainman’s paternal grandmother Lillian died at age 33 in 1934 from breast cancer and her sister Jan is an ovarian, uterine, and breast cancer survivor. Shainman feels she has an opportunity to share what she has learned about BRCA/hereditary cancer and empower others. Her hope is that future generations will have less invasive cancer risk reducing options available to them. Shainman signed on to Executive Produce Pink & Blue the very minute she learned about the project.

On a daily basis, Shainman works tirelessly to inform people affected by Hereditary Cancer via many social media platforms, national media placements, and various public relations efforts. She is a co-administrator of the largest private BRCA/High Risk private support group for women only on Facebook (over 6000 members). She co-moderates #Hcchat (a monthly twitter chat) alongside Genetic Counseling Expert Ellen Matloff and Patient Advocate Georgia Hurst. In addition, Shainman's personal BRCA/Hereditary Cancer story is featured in the book THE PINK MOON LOVELIES: EMPOWERING STORIES OF SURVIVAL compiled by Nicki Boscia Durlester and she contributed several pages to Teri Smieja and Dr. Jonathan Herman's book entitled LETTERS TO DOCTORS. She has an award nominated Hereditary Cancer Pinterest Board and is a regular contributor to CURE Magazine.

Shainman is currently completing "Resurrection Lily" her BRCA memoir. Other Executive Producer credits include the acclaimed dramatic thriller FAVOR and the upcoming feature film about the forgotten son of paper currency - The 2 DOLLAR BILL DOCUMENTARY.

She is married to Jon Shainman, a news anchor and reporter for WPTV news channel 5 in South Florida. They have two children.
